Norman is acknowledged as a world expert on fibrous fuelled boilers and the thermodynamics of co-generation in agro-industry. He has published many papers . After 31 years with John Thompson, a boiler company currently in the Rolls Royce group, he now runs his own company providing consultancy and engineering services to the energy industry. He provides a well balanced commercial approach to engineering.

After matriculating from High School, Norman Magasiner served a tool and die making apprenticeship and then read Mechanical Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand, graduating in 1955. He joined John Thompson in the UK two years later, having worked on a greenfield graphite refinery project in the African bush and on structural engineering research in the UK.

John Thompson were then constructing one of world's first CO2, graphite moderated nuclear reactors and Norman joined as a trainee in the boiler design and construction departments.

He was subsequently asked to establish a boiler design and contracting department for the company's office in Johannesburg. Thompsons at that time had less than 2% of the industrial boiler market in Southern Africa. By carefully analysing market requirements and designing plant to meet its specific needs, he led a team which enlarged the company's share to greater than 80% over a 15 year period.

In various roles within JT Africa, firstly as Project Engineer, then as Technical Director, Assistant Managing Director and finally as Managing Director he was intimately involved in the development of many new technologies. These included:

  • The introduction of a new range of high efficiency coal fired shell boilers during the 1970's. This range won a design award from the Shell Company. Models from this range were exported to Chile, Columbia, Italy, Israel, all of the Southern and Central African countries, Mauritius and Japan.
  • The introduction of new watertube boiler designs into industries burning biomass materials.
  • The development of watertube boilers to burn high-vanadium residue oil.

Mr Magasiner founded Thermal Energy Systems in 1988 in order to service the biomass energy market using proceedures and data which developed while with JTA. The organisation retains the right to use this engineering package although it has been much further developed since then.
